Vintage Leather: Catherine Fulop and Gabriela Sabatini

A blast from the past-

From the 1990s, Venezuelan model/actress/TV personality/glamour girl Catherine Fulop wearing a black leather trouser-suit, and Argentine tennis player Gabriela Sabatini wearing a black leather dress:

  1. Sometimes it hurts to tell the truth, but I'll tell it anyway; it shows how old I really am. Way way back many years ago, when dinosaurs still roamed the planet and the internet was just a crazy dream in the imaginative minds of computer scientists, I used to fancy the living daylights out of Gabriela Sabatini. I first noticed her when she was featured in the newspaper I then read playing in a tennis tournament aged about 15, just a little bit younger than me. I thought then and still think now that she was absolutely fucking gorgeous. Over the next maybe 6 or 7 years I used to follow women's tennis almost as assiduously as my favourite sport cricket, and I used to drool like crazy over Gabriela. I used to buy sports magazines just to get images of her; there was no digital archive in those days so you had to make do with the printed record. Some critics said she looked kind of "mannish", but I just, and I think rightly, saw her as what I'd call strongly beautiful. One of her trademarks that always got me was her hairstyle and her signature headbands, but I loved every aspect of her looks and dress. Sadly she was never quite as successful as she was gorgeous, she always seemed to get knocked out in the quarter or semi finals of major tournaments, but I loved her all the same. After her tennis career was over she branched out into fashion and cosmetics; by about 40 she was still single and still absolutely stunning, but in a more kinda refined way than in her exotic youth. This image is fantastic, I certainly never saw it at the time, but if you want to appreciate the real breathtaking beauty she was you should search out photos from her tennis heyday, there's plenty still out there.

    1. In some photos Gabriela Sabatini looks great - like here- but in other photos I think she could be a little more feminine. Unfortunately in general she's not really my type but this is a fantastic image, I agree. I had a few crushes when I was younger that I look back and think not sure now. One from the late 1980s was an actress called Julie Carmen, who was in the film Fright Night 2. She also had an exotic Latina look and was quite striking, in her youth.

  2. As a footnote I'd add that Gabriela is of part Italian ancestry through her grandfather - Sabatini is an Italian name not a Hispanic one. Apparently there's quite a sizeable community of Italian origin in Argentina.
